After 37 years as a solicitor in Central Queensland, Cam Schroder has decided it’s time for a career change.

Mr Schroder has sold his firm Yeppoon Lawyers, formerly Cam Schroder Lawyers, to his business partner Leonie Davey.

The reason for his desire to do something different can be traced back to when Mr Schroder was finishing his high school education and his mother told him to “get a ticket in something that will get you a job”.

“So I did a law degree,” Mr Schroder said.

“But in my first year of university, I wanted to become an artist.”

Fast forward more than four decades to 2023 and Mr Schroder has decided to follow his passion for art beyond what has previously been a hobby.

“I realised at 63 years of age, if I didn’t pursue a full-time artist career, I would never do it, so I sold my legal practice,” he said.

“I realised that I could sell a painting in Yeppoon for $500, but in Sydney you would add a zero once you’re established.

“So I focused on the Sydney market and I’m having my second exhibition at the Tap Gallery on Wednesday (September 27).”

Mr Schroder said he had “deliberately placed a low price on his paintings at this stage in the range of $250 to $500.”

“Because the best form of advertising is getting your painting into the lounge of someone that owns it.

“I do have prints of my artwork for sale locally at Stewart’s department store at East Street Rockhampton for $48 each.”

Mr Schroder said he would still work as a consultant for Yeppoon Lawyers with a small number of files.

“But my main aim is to become a full-time artist.”
