WITH recent retail index results showing Rockhampton's grocery prices are 7% higher than Brisbane, mothers Michelle Rixon and Alicia Mather say groceries are manageable if you budget right.
Both mothers of three, Michelle said she and Alicia found grocery prices in Rockhampton to be reasonable.
"I think you get better prices at Coles," Michelle said during a shopping trip to City Centre Plaza over the weekend.
"I have three boys so it is a struggle sometimes, but the essentials like bread and milk are always $1 or $2 which really helps families like ours."
The latest index of retail prices published by the Queensland government statistician's office found general necessities like milk and bread were much more expensive in regional areas compared to greater Brisbane.
Overall, Rockhampton's prices were in between the cheapest and dearest in comparison to other regional areas.
The town of Charleville was the highest in this category, at 20.2% more expensive than its state capital, with the cheapest prices at the Sunshine Coast, which were 13.6% less expensive.
Alicia said it was mostly baby supplies like nappies that would add up, but the stay at home mums agreed rent was the killer when it came down to cost of living pressures.
"Everyone I know is moving from Yeppoon to Rocky because you're paying so much more for rent down there than here," Michelle said.
"We're paying $300 a week for a three-bedroom house when it's $400 to $450 for that in Yeppoon."
The retail index measured prices of goods and services including Alcohol and tobacco, communication and education, health, housing and insurance to name a few, comparing the difference in prices all over the State.

Brisbane was given an index of 100, which set the benchmark for other centres.
