A Central Queensland caravan park and service station will get a huge revamp after plans received the tick of approval from council.

After lodging plans in November 2022, an expansion of he Parkhurst Motel and Van Park was approved by Rockhampton Regional Council, with councillors voting unanimously in favour of the development.

According to the plans, lodged by owners of the property McKay Ventures Pty Ltd, the works would see the existing service station transformed into a truck stop with four regular fuel pumps for eight vehicles and two high-flow diesel pumps.

The truck stop will also include 20 car parks and six truck parks.

The proposed service station building will be integrated with a food and drink outlet, described as a “quick service restaurant” which will also include a drive-through facility that loops around the rear of the building.

The upgrades of the service station are including in the first stage of the project.

Stage two will see the upgrades to the caravan park located behind the service station.

The upgrades to the caravan park will include 12 single bedroom units with a kitchen and bathroom, and another seven family accommodation cabins with two bedrooms, bathroom and a kitchen.

According to the development application, the service station, food and drink outlet, short term accommodation and tourist park would operate 24 hours a day seven days a week.

As part of the redevelopment the caravan park will also include 10 ensuite cabins, 10 accommodation cabins, a camp kitchen, dump point and manager’s residence.

The 900-904 Yaamba Rd site sold in 2017 for $1.25 million, to McKay Venture Pty Ltd.

Parkhurst is one of the Rockhampton growing suburbs with one of the region’s biggest infrastructure projects, the Rockhampton Ring Road, currently under construction.

According to the development application’s economic report, the Ring Road would reduce the number of service stations available to drivers, including heavy vehicles that need stations with enough space to manoeuvre, no height restrictions, high-flow diesel pumps and AdBlue additive.

It is expected there will be an increased level of demand on the service stations located before and after the Ring Road connections, which includes the existing facility at the Parkhurst Motel and Van Park site.
