TO Steve Conner, the price of fuel locally compared to other areas in the state just doesn't make sense.
The Yeppoon man covers big distances to get his workplace in Theodore, about 200km south-west of Rockhampton, and has noticed how prices jump as soon as he reaches the Beef Capital.
"There's certainly a big disparity across the state and I don't know why we're paying more for it in CQ, especially in Rocky and Yeppoon," he said.
Yesterday Steve was fuelling up a jerry can at a United service station on the Yeppoon-Rockhampton Rd, and he said he always makes an effort to visit that particular service station because of the price.
They're currently around 134cpl, which is 10 cents cheaper than some places.
"They're the local guys having a go," Steve said.
"They always seem to have cheaper fuel … if they can sell it for that much I don't understand why others can't."
Steve has a fuel card to use with his vehicle which must be used at companies like Caltex and BP, but he said he prefers to go elsewhere when he has to pay for fuel himself because of the price increase.
This week Bruce Young MP and Michelle Landry MP launched a Capricornia Fuel Watch, asking the public to identify where the cheapest and most expensive fuel is in the area.
They hope, with the support of The Morning Bulletin, it will recognise businesses who are providing fuel at a lower margin and encourage healthy competition.
