A Rockhampton woman has had “life saving surgery” and is now awake and conscious three days after she was allegedly stabbed repeatedly by her husband on Father’s Day.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch acting Officer in Charge Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley said Amy White, 38, was out of the woods.
“There has been some amazing work by the ambulance officers who responded and the staff at the Rockhampton Hospital in emergency, surgical and ICU,” he said.
“She is very fortunate.”
Ms White’s husband, Geoffrey Ernest White, 52, allegedly used a knife at the Constantia Crescent, Frenchville home when he allegedly attacked her on September 3 just after 7pm.
Police confirmed Ms White managed to call triple-0 and tell police she had been assaulted.
Emergency services discovered Ms White with multiple stab wounds, but Mr White had no physical injuries.
Ms White was rushed to Rockhampton Hospital in a critical condition.
Det Snr Sgt Mawdsley said her injuries were mostly around her upper chest and neck and her condition improved on Tuesday afternoon to stable.
“We haven't spoken to her yet, we are going to give her some time to recuperate and look to engage with her in the coming days,” he said.
The crime scene is expected to be finalised late on Wednesday and the home will be handed back to Ms White’s family.
Det Snr Sgt Mawdsley confirmed a knife was seized.
Speaking the day after the event, Capricorn Crime Group Detective Inspector Luke Peachey said it was a graphic scene for all involved.
“There were other persons present at the time, a very distressing scene for … neighbours and first responders,” Det Insp Peachey said.
Det Insp Peachey said Mr White was arrested “without incident”.
Mr White was charged the following morning, on Monday, September 4, with one count of attempted murder (domestic violence).
Det Insp Peachey said there was no indication of domestic violence history in the relationship.
Mr White had his matter briefly mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday, where he was represented by solicitor Lauren Townsend.
Mr White, a plant operator born in Bundaberg, did not appear in court.
Ms Townsend did not make an application for bail on behalf of Ms White and requested a brief of evidence for the charge.
Magistrate Cameron Press remanded Mr White in custody and adjourned his matter to November 1.
The Whites were owners of the home.
“I think in the next couple of days we will have a clear idea of how this has happened and reasons why,” Det Insp Peachey said.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, you should report it to police.
