Atherton Tablelands couple injured in Bruce Highway crash, St Lawrence

A Far North Queensland couple in their 70s are lucky to be alive after a crash caused their car to become “airborne” between Rockhampton and Mackay. UPDATES.

A man and woman in their 70s from Far North Queensland remain in Rockhampton Hospital recovering from a serious crash between Rockhampton and Mackay on Tuesday (January 16) which saw their vehicle go “airborne”.

A single vehicle accident was reported to emergency services just after 2pm at St Lawrence, two hours north of Rockhampton.

The scene was located was halfway between Marlborough and St Lawrence on the Bruce Highway.

It was reported a vehicle lost control and exited the highway at high-speed, hitting a culvert and became airborne for a short period of time before coming to a stop a short distance past the culvert.

The vehicle had two occupants, a man and woman who were both in their 70s from the Atherton Tablelands.

Marlborough SES volunteers came to assist paramedics and police officers.

The female patient was able to exit the vehicle freely and was treated by paramedics for a suspected spinal injury.

RACQ Capricorn Service flew it’s Rescue300 from the Rockhampton base to the scene and assisted in mechanically freeing the man.

He was treated for a broken leg and suspected internal injuries, including his chest.

Both patients were stabilised and flown to Rockhampton Hospital for further treatment.

As of Thursday morning (January 18) the couple were both stable in Rockhampton Hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
