Almost a year to the date of when the Kern Arcade closed, the markets formerly held in the centre’s carpark have found another new home.
The Kern Arcade markets moved to Callaghan Park in January 2021, rebranding as the Rocky Racecourse Markets.
After a year at the racecourse, market co-ordinator Madonna McMullen said sadly things weren’t working out.
“The racecourse was really picturesque and lovely but we had to cancel several days because of racing commitments and road closures for Rocky River Run and Rockynats,” she said.
“We can’t afford to lose Sundays for our farmers, it’s too confusing.”
The markets will relaunch on February 13 at the new location, in the undercover car park underneath the cinema at Stockland Rockhampton.
“We were looking for a new location and Stockland really wanted us there and have bent over backwards to have us there,” Ms McMullen said
“I think it will be a great location, easy access, it’s central,” Ms McMullen said.
There was some speculation about the markets moving to the showgrounds but this wasn’t possible due to other events being on Sundays and the inability to secure a permanent spot.
All of the stallholders were returning and were excited, Ms McMullen said.
“Everyone is following, we will have our food and coffee van, all our local farmers, our craft people, it will be a really good market,” she said.
The new markets begin on February 13 from early morning to noon.
