A recently widowed man invited a female friend over for dinner.

What he did to her next left her in a state of shock and fear, along with a sense of violation and she has been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, adjustment disorder, Rockhampton District Court heard this week.

Retired meatworker Wayne Wilson, 67, raped the woman in his Mount Morgan home in September 2022 – two months after his wife died.

He had been convicted in Tasmania in 1999 for unlawful intercourse with a defective.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Sutton said Wilson knew the woman and asked her to visit for dinner.

He said Wilson called her into his bedroom under the pretence to show her some of his wife’s clothes.

Judge Jeff Clarke said Wilson tried to undress the victim, but she resisted him.

Wilson pulled down her underwear, then pushed her backwards, pulled up her dress, exposing her and tried to get her to perform oral sex.

“She told you ‘no’ several times before you then raped her,” Judge Clarke said.

The victim left Wilson’s home.

Through text messages between the pair, Wilson admitted his crime and made other statements “falling short of any remorse or expressions of sorrow”.

During a phone call set up by police, Wilson was asked by the victim ‘why?’.

He said: “honestly, I don’t know darling. I’m so sorry. I didn’t plan on doing it. Sh** happens.”

Mr Sutton said Wilson had not shown any genuine signs of remorse.

Judge Clarke said the victim now suffered from anxiety, depression and adjustment disorder and had to move away, leaving her with a financial burden and isolating her from friends and family.

Defence barrister Sheridan Shaw said her client was “remorseful for the harm he has caused” the victim.

She said Wilson was born and raised in Launceston, Tasmania, and had worked as a barman for 10 years, then crisis accommodation supervisor for 10 years before a 30-year career in meat works, including working for Teys Australia.

Ms Shaw said the father-of-four and his wife moved to Central Queensland in 2001 due to her health issues.

“Since then, he has established deep roots in Central Queensland,” she said.

Ms Shaw provided the court reference letters from people Wilson knew through bowls and darts which Judge Clarke said talk about him “normally being honest” but nothing about being remorseful.

Ms Shaw said Wilson had health issues – diabetes, an ulcer on his foot which caused him problems with walking, high cholesterol and prostate cancer.

The court heard Wilson was prescribed Viagra.

Wilson pleaded guilty to one count of rape and was sentenced to six years in prison with parole eligibility set for March 11, 2026.
