A Central Queensland schoolteacher has been warned he could face jail time he continues to commit traffic offences.

Jarrod Blamey Mabo teaches music at Yeppoon’s St Brendan’s College, the same school which produced rugby league stars Harry Grant, Ben Hunt and Dave Taylor.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on March 7 to two counts of disqualified driving.

The court heard that on Christmas Day last year, police caught Mabo driving on Thuringowa Drive at Townsville when his licence was court disqualified.

Then, just over two weeks later on January 14, police busted him behind the wheel again – this time on the Bruce Highway in the Townsville region.

The prosecution submitted that fines were still appropriate, but Mabo “probably has to be put on notice” that repeat disqualified driving is “a quick way to go to jail and a very silly way to go to jail.”

The court heard Mabo had a “reasonably limited” traffic history.

Solicitor Rebecca Harris said getting to and from St Brendan’s would not be an issue for Mabo, but he also did music tutoring at other schools in the area so he would have to make arrangements for that.

She said at the time of the offending, Mabo was visiting family in Townsville.

“He made admissions on the first occasion it was a silly decision to drive.

“The second occasion, he does instruct he was heading home … to make it back to work – but it’s not an excuse for the offending.”

Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne fined Mabo $1750 and for each of the offences, disqualified him from driving for two years.

Mr Byrne also gave Mabo a warning in line with that of the prosecution.

“If you are caught driving during today’s disqualification period or periods, you’re seriously at risk of a term of imprisonment,” Mr Byrne said.

“So be very careful moving forward.”

Traffic convictions were recorded.
