A Central Queensland mother claims she supplied 28 grams of illegal drugs to two teenage boys - one her own son - so they would not be introduced to the “disgraceful underbelly of drug supply”.

The mother, who can not be identified for legal reasons, was criticised for her decision by Supreme Court’s Justice Graeme Crow.

“This is 14 grams per child,” he said.

“It’s dozens of joints.

“This is a small stash for both these young boys.

“It’s not as if it’s going to a party and a child is offered and that’s it; it’s a stash for them to use.

“Proper parenting, as you should full well know, would be like your parents parenting that they don’t introduce drugs at all.

“Not only do they not introduce drugs, but it’s the example that’s set - it would be very difficult for a child who sees their parents taking drugs and the parent, a parent who seems to normalize the use of drugs in their household, for the child to be able to turn their back on drugs.

“Very, very difficult.”

The Biloela mother-of-three was sentenced in Rockhampton on November 13 after pleading guilty to two counts of supplying drugs to a minor, one of possessing methamphetamines and one of possessing drug utensils.

The mother, whose criminal record was littered with convictions for possessing small amounts of meth, supplied the boys 14 grams each of marijuana in September 2022.

Her offending was uncovered when police raided her home on October 13, 2022, and found a tick sheet with two names on it that showed one of the teens had yet to pay for their supply.

Defence barrister Scott Moon said his client had experience with the “disgraceful underbelly of drug supply” and “she didn’t want to introduce the children to that”.

The mother, who has been unemployed for a long time, was on probation at the time of this offending and it was her third time on probation.

“If you’re going to live a lifestyle where you take drugs, even marijuana, it’s inevitable your children will do the same,” Justice Crow warned.

“If that’s the case, it’s going to be a disaster - their lives, your life and society around you in which you live.”

Justice Crow sentenced her to two years prison with immediate parole and convictions recorded.

“It’s deeply troubling when any parent gives their child a dangerous substance, any dangerous drug,” he said.

“It’s a gross dereliction of parental responsibility.”
