A Queensland man is accused of driving more 900km up the Bruce Highway with two kilograms of drugs on-board.

Kilkivan’s Jason Scott Black applied for bail in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on after being charged in Proserpine with one count of possessing a schedule two drug quantity of or exceeding schedule three, two of buy or possess S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons, one of possessing a drug utensil and one of possessing a weapon.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe told the court Mr Black was allegedly found in possession of about two kilograms of marijuana and “there was some intelligence suggesting he was transporting it to Cairns region”.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said a 54-year-old man from Kilkivan was charged after police apprehended him at a motel on Main Street, Proserpine, just before 5pm on June 4.

Snr Cons Rowe said police also located a telescopic baton, a drug pipe and medication for which Mr Black did not have a prescription.

Defence lawyer Tayler Bowdren said Mr Black had sold his 4wd and was towing it to the buyer in Atherton.

She said he planned to leave the Gympie region.

“He’s just currently doing up his house and selling items so that he has the finances to improve his house after being the victim of a home invasion on Australia Day this year,” Ms Bowdren said.

“Unfortunately, he wasn’t covered by insurance, so repairing his damage is quite costly.”

She also said Mr Black was unemployed and receives a Centrelink payment and was trying to get the disability pension as he suffered ongoing pain from injuries sustained in a car accident five years ago and a tree branch falling on him a year ago.

The court heard Mr Black’s father was in a nursing home in Gympie.

Snr Cons Rowe referred to Mr Black’s convictions for drug and weapon offences in Gympie Magistrates Court in February 2025 for which he was fined $1500.

Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne also referred to Mr Black’s drug convictions from late 2022 when he was fined $600 for the more than 7o marijuana plants police found growing in a tent in his Kilkivan backyard.

The court heard he had no prior convictions for failing to appear in court or breaching bail.

Mr Byrne granted Mr Black bail to return to his Kilkivan home and report twice a week to Gympie police.

His charges were adjourned to June 30 in the Proserpine Magistrates Court.
