A Great Wall’s great journey around Central Qld has been detailed in a court which also heard one of the four young people allegedly busted in the stolen silver ute was bitten by a police dog while fleeing.

The four were charged after the stolen 2023 Great Wall Cannon was captured on camera being driven at Bluff, Duaringa and Rockhampton over a three-day period.

Two of the four pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrate’s Court while the other two made bail applications.

Anthony Wayne Giess, 26, was in the driver’s seat of ute when it was stopped by police in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Two of the alleged co-offenders fled and one of those was chased and bitten by a police dog, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Brandon Selic said the ute was stolen on February 10 from a Rockhampton home.

He said Giess was captured on CCTV carrying out two fuel drive offs at the BP North Rockhampton on Yaamba Road, Park Avenue, about 1.30am and a Bluff service station at 11.30am in the stolen Great Wall ute on February 12 – one for $147 of diesel and the other $63.20 of diesel.

Mr Selic said Giess’s driver’s license had expired more than 2000 days prior to being intercepted on February 13 at 4.15am on Musgrave Street.

“Police located it (the vehicle) driven on Charles Street (Berserker) towards Musgrave Street,” Mr Selic said.

“Police stopped the vehicle on Musgrave Street.”

Alison Ethel Rose Williams, 18, and sisters Tillara and Kellatina Oakley were allegedly passengers in the vehicle at the time, the court heard.

Mr Selic said Giess was arrested and Tillara were arrested at the scene.

He said Williams ran from the vehicle and was arrested after being located by the dog squad “in which the defendant sustained a dog bite”.

Kellatina also allegedly fled the scene back towards Charles Street where she was later arrested, Mr Selic told the court.

Defence lawyer Pierre Lammersdorf said Giess, a father-of-two, had recently been unemployed but previously worked at a petrol station for a year before working in the Townsville region.

He said his client, who completed year 10, had substance abuse issues which fuelled most of this offending.

Giess pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing, one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle at night in company, obstruct police, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence and failing to appear in court (for unrelated matters).

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said Giess had unlawful use of motor vehicle convictions on his criminal record.

She sentenced him to nine months prison with immediate parole along with 18-months' probation and fined him $150 for unlicensed driving.

Convictions were recorded.

Williams pleaded guilty to one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, obstruct police and public nuisance.

Mr Selic said the public nuisance charge was laid following a punching fight she was involved in on a public road in Woorabinda on January 4.

The court heard Williams was on probation at the time and had completed 32 hours of community service with 70 hours to be completed by October.

Mr Lammersdorf said Williams had a two-year-old child being raised by her uncle in Dysart.

He said his client was exposed to domestic violence and substance abuse growing up and only went to Year 7 at school.

He also said Williams had completed an Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services course.

Williams was placed on 18-months' probation and must perform 90 hours of community services and pay a $400 fine.

No convictions were recorded.

Tillara Oakley, 21, has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle – one on February 12 at Duaringa and the other on February 13 – along with one count of breach of bail.

The mother of a one-year-old made a bail application.

Defence lawyer Oscar Millroy said Ms Oakley wished to make a submission to police about her alleged role which would cause delay in her matters being finalised.

He said she was alleged to have been a passenger in the stolen vehicle, not driving it nor involved in the “taking of the vehicle”.

Mr Millroy said that due to her age, even if she were to plead or be found guilty, it would be unlikely she’d be sentenced to serve actual time in custody.

“It has been a wakeup call for Miss Oakley,” he said, telling the court the most recent arrest occurred only a few hours after she was released on bail by police at Woorabinda to live in Rockhampton with her aunty and she breached her curfew bail condition.

Mr Selic said it was concerning that Miss Oakley’s criminal history contained three fail to appear convictions and two contravene direction or requirement.

Kellatina Oakley, 18, also made an application for bail on Friday with the court hearing she needed to apply for Legal Aid funding.

She has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle – one on February 12 at Duaringa and the other on February 13 – along with one count of breach of bail and one of obstruct police.

Defence lawyer Mark Zeller said his client had rung someone for a lift home and they turned up in the stolen vehicle.

He said his client accepted she shouldn’t have re-entered the vehicle the second time after finding out it was stolen.

The sisters were both granted bail with a curfew and reporting conditions ordered not to contact the co-accused.

The charges against the sisters are due back in court on March 10 and March 15.

Neither has entered any pleas.
