Airport security was so scared of a man wielding a machete in the carpark one morning last week they alerted authorities a court has heard.

Daley Ella Doyle, 25, hacked at a tree, hedges and his own vehicle before he drove off and lost control of his vehicle, smashing into a parked car.

He continued driving on the wrong side of the road and footpaths before coming to a stop after hitting a gutter on July 6, police prosecutor Brandon Selic told Rockhampton Magistrates Court on July 7.

Police had been called by Doyle’s partner after he threatened self-harm over the phone about 9.25am, and security called police as they witnessed him waving the machete around yelling unintelligible things.

Magistrate Grace Kahlert said his actions were ‘concerning’.

“The security guards were sufficiently concerned and frightened that they had to contact the police,” she said.

“Then you get into the car and you drive erratically, lose control of the car, spin around doing a 360 and hit other cars.

“Then you kept trying to drive. You drove on the wrong side of the road, up onto the footpath and then, fortunately for you, the car came to a stop when it hits the gutter, and then you did a runner.”

Defence lawyer Pierre Lammersdorf said his client had a five-month-old child with his partner and he had worked as a contractor on the railways for the past four or five years.

“This can be described as outrageous behaviour by my client,” he said.

Doyle pleaded guilty to one count each of possessing a knife in a public place, going armed to cause fear and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Ms Kahlert sentenced him to three months prison, wholly suspended and operational for 12 months.

She also placed him on a two-year probation order and disqualified him from driving for six months.

Convictions were recorded.
