A former school sports captain turned DJ and music promoter turned to party drugs and supplying them after losing family and friends to suicide.
Cody De Landelles Barnicoat, 24, lost contact with his parents for three to four years and was couch-surfing when he was busted for six supplies charges, Rockhampton District Court heard last month.
Defence barrister Julie Marsden said her client, who had been a sports captain at Rockhampton High School, had struggled with his mental health.
“He has lost a lot of family and friends to suicide,” she said.
Ms Marsden said De Landelles Barnicoat got heavily into drugs and alcohol when he was about 20 after losing a family member and a person close to him to suicide and then he got into cocaine and MDMA and party drugs.”
Judge Jeff Clarke said police had observed De Landelles Barnicoat engage in what looked like suspicious activity at a service station, “which seems to be a pretty common place for people to do drug deals these days” and pulled him over a short time later.
Crown prosecutor Tessa Wormsley said De Landelles Barnicoat was searched by police on July 2, 2021.
He was found in possession of $4000, spoons, scoopers, sliders, clipseal bags, balloons, metal straw, seven empty yellow capsules with a smiley face, a bottle of Xanax tablets weighing over 6g and 0.04g of methamphetamines.
His phone revealed the six drug supplies on Facebook Messenger and SnapChat consisting of cocaine, marijuana, MDMA and alprazolam ranging from $20 to $1350.
Ms Wormsley said police located a drug advertisement by De Landelles Barnicoat, a message indicating he knew a customer was on selling the drugs, and messages were he “talking about what prices customers should sell the drugs”, what profit he had been making and selling to him on tick and splitting the profit.
Ms Marsden said her client was supplying the drugs to people attending parties.
She said his life had spiralled out of control and he acknowledges he had been making “very poor choices”.
Ms Marsden said De Landelles Barnicoat had moved back home and was living with his parents, sober.
She said her client was still working as a DJ and music promoter, but he had been seeing a psychologist over telehealth to deal with trauma and learn some coping strategies moving forward.
Ms Marsden said De Landelles Barnicoat and a friend had set up a young men’s support group, through a sports club, that meets once a month where they “assist each other with dealing with trauma in their lives”.
The court heard De Landelles Barnicoat’s traffic history contained a drink driving and disqualified driving convictions and his criminal record made up of breaches of bail and fail to appear in court in relation to the supply charges.
He pleaded guilty on March 22 to six counts of supplying dangerous drugs, two of possessing dangerous drugs, one count each of possessing anything used in a crime, possessing property suspected use in a drug offence, possessing tainted property and disqualified driving.
Judge Clarke placed him on a two year probation order with convictions recorded and disqualified him from driving for two years.
