A Central Queensland mother found out after she was busted with methamphetamine and cannabis that she was pregnant with her third child.

Chutima Haxell, 38, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on August 25 to possessing methamphetamines and cannabis.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said about 2.53am on February 19, police saw Haxell driving on the Scenic Highway at Ross Creek and intercepted her on Arthur Street.

Sgt Ongheen said when police spoke to Haxell she appeared nervous.

“She (Haxell) said she had left The Strand Hotel about 11.30pm before going to her friend’s house and leaving there at 12.30am,” Sgt Ongheen said.

“When asked, (Haxell) was unable to account for the further two-and-a-half hours.

“She stated she uses drugs...”

Police searched Haxell’s vehicle and found a small plastic container with 3.3g of cannabis in it.

They also found two clip-seal bags which contained methamphetamines (total weight 1.8g).

Sgt Ongheen said when questioned about the meth, Haxell said it was MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) but tests confirmed it was methamphetamines.

The court heard Haxell had numerous previous possessing dangerous drugs offences on her criminal history.

Solicitor Felicity Davis said Haxell obtained the cannabis from a friend who also supplied the clip-seal bags of powder.

“It’s a bizarre explanation, but at the time, she (Haxell) did think it was MSM,” Ms Davis said.

“At the time she’d been ill, she’d had her gall bladder out and she was using these drugs and supplements.

“She then found out later that she was actually 18 weeks’ pregnant - she’s now had the baby.”

Ms Davis said Haxell was currently not working due to having the baby, her third child, but she intended to return back to work as a chef.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale fined Haxell $750 and a conviction was recorded.
