A young man accused of knocking a taxi driver unconscious during a robbery by punching him six times in the head would seek accommodation at a hostel or motel if granted bail, a court heard.

Angus Brian Walmsley, 20, was originally charged with grievous bodily harm after the January 21 alleged offence on West Street in Rockhampton, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard this week.

His grievous bodily harm charge was changed to robbery with personal violence on April 18, police prosecutor Brandon Selic said.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said the allegations involve Mr Walmsley allegedly punching the taxi driver six times in the face, leaving him unconscious.

Defence lawyer Oscar Millroy said the alleged victim, when he regained consciousness, took himself to the Rockhampton Airport “to clean himself up and then ultimately attended the hospital”.

Mr Millroy said Mr Walmsley was amid a “family dispute” and “drug/substance abuse”.

He said his client had spent 200 days so far in custody and submitted he was at risk of serving too much time.

Mr Millroy said Mr Walmsley was supported by his mother who, due to personal reasons, could not have him reside with her and he would therefore seek accommodation at a hostel or motel initially if released on bail.

Ms Beckinsale said the alleged offending was very serious.

“Drugs are clearly involved,” she said.

Ms Beckinsale said there were no conditions offered today that mitigated his risk of reoffending or failure to appear in court.

Bail was refused and Mr Walmsley was remanded in custody.
