Owners hold final say on tradies for insured repairs

MASTER Builders Central Queensland regional manager Dennis Bryant wants home-owners to know they hold the cards when it comes to contractors.

MASTER Builders Central Queensland regional manager Dennis Bryant wants home-owners to know they hold the cards when it comes to contractors.

Following frustration over insurance companies outsourcing to southern contractors for Cyclone Marcia repair work, Mr Bryant said it was important for home-owners to know their rights.

"Insurance companies have what they call 'panel builders' which are companies they call on in disasters," Mr Bryant said.

"What people need to know is that there is no requirement for a home owner to use the insurance company's nominated builder. However, if the nominated builder is going to charge less than a local builder, the home owner has to meet the difference."

Mr Bryant urged homeowners to source local contractors where they could.

"My biggest concern is southern builders not meeting the Category 3 standards we have in CQ," he said.

"I encourage everyone to use local tradies. They know the rules, use local suppliers and it helps our local economy."
