IT may take more than a huff and a puff to blow down Angus Hughes' experimental project.

While most university students are taking a breather during their break from studies, Angus is busy building a "tiny house".

It isn't built from sticks but from wooden pallets.The first-year CQUniversity engineering student has designed the project completely out of wooden pallets, in a bid to trial a sustainable and environmentally friendly project from recycled materials.

At one stage he even dreamt of solar panels.

From a distance, it appears to be no bigger than a 6m by 4m structure. When you look closer, Angus has strategically placed five pallets side-by-side to make up the length.

It is three pallets wide and three high.

The floor is diamond-rough and made out of planks on wooden boxes from Bradnam's Windows and Doors, in Kawana.

Angus has spent about $200 so far.

"I read an article on architects in New York who were designing houses out of pallets for refugees in disaster-stricken areas, so that's part of the reason I wanted to do this," he said.

"Pallets are a wasted resource and businesses have to pay to dump them.

"Not only is that illogical from a sustainable point of view, it's also not economical."

Angus hopes to have the project finished before Christmas.
