LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

If you have money, you may enter Australia, even during stringent Coronavirus lockdowns.

If you’re a citizen without money, you may not enter, no matter your legal entitlement.

If you’re a refugee, asylum seeker or stateless, you may not enter, no matter how compelling your case.

If you’re an Afghani translator or fixer, you may not enter, no matter our moral obligation.

Because you lack money.

However, if you have money and you’re an actor, a reality-TV person, involved in film production, if somehow you can convince a state/territory government to advocate to the Commonwealth that there’s “economic benefit” to your being here, Home Affairs Minister Andrews or DHS Minister Dutton might just wave (and waive) you into Australia.

“Potential benefit to the economy” - the key phrase.

Considering General Morrison’s statement, “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept” by its behaviours, this government clearly values money above legal entitlements and humanitarian and moral values.

Think about that when you cast your vote next time.

Life won’t be able to go back to normal after the latest Delta outbreaks, one expert warns, as she points to one ‘frightening’ situation. Do you agree?

Joshua Rudge: It is governments that are messing with the normal life as we know it not this virus. So while we let them mess with it then, yes, it will be different. But we don’t have to let them do it.

Caroline Ferris: Not if we’re not permitted to go back to normal.

Jennifer Kulasegaram: It will be a new normal. One where we will have to explain to our kids what life used to be like. A life where masks were only worn at costume parties.

Ian McCully: No, it will all come better.

Michael Bates: Can’t unscramble the biological eggs ... welcome to life on a crowded planet.

Pat Cochrane: I bet people were saying the same thing about the flu. No one knows honestly.
