Lain Martin has left behind a legacy as an absolute gentleman who had a heart of gold.

The 38-year-old Capricorn Coast man sadly died in a tragic incident involving an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) on his private property at Barmaryee on Wednesday night (December 8).

Mr Martin had worked for NQ Cranes for 15 years, marking the occasion only just a couple of weeks ago.

He first began as a service technician based in Rockhampton and moved up the ranks to the role of branch supervisor and then a key project supervisor.

NQ Cranes director and operations manager Kris Pidgeon, based in Mackay, said Mr Martin was an employee you couldn’t replace in a business, not just because of his work ethic but also his personality.

He worked all over the country for the business, from the Northern Territory to New South Wales, overseeing crane inspectors, project managing major refurbishments, undertaking third party inspections, runway upgrades and large crane replacements.

“Because he was such an experienced and knowledgeable guy we would bring him for special projects,” Mr Pidgeon said.

“He would train the apprentices the right way, he would tick all the boxes in the safety audit, he would manage projects and always be on budget and on time.

“He was one of the best project managers in the overhead crane industry in Queensland.

“But overall, he had a heart of gold, he was a great guy.”

The loss of Mr Martin has been felt across the whole community at NQ Cranes.

“Everyone that knows him has nothing but good things to say about him,” Mr Pidgeon said.

“We are a pretty big family … We have 97 employees but Lain would know the vast majority of them, he would know at least 20 of them very well.

“When someone is taken suddenly and like that, no one can believe it.

“He was just a genuine nice guy, and when something like that happens, it’s sad.

“He’s got one of those personalities that you can’t replace him.”
