Gladstone man busted with more than 50g steroids
A routine police raid uncovered a significant steroid haul, but it was the accused’s astonishing explanation that left authorities and the court baffled.
A young man busted with more than 50g of steroids gave police a surprising answer as to why he had it.
Former Toolooa State High School student Izack Rheece Attard, 22, was busted possessing 51.9 grams of testosterone when police raided his Gladstone residence on April 12, 2024, the Supreme Court in Rockhampton heard today.
Crown prosecutor Cassandra Nitz said police also seized two mobile phones which Attard had used to supply illegal drugs.
“He told police he supplied the testosterone to (someone) for alcohol, about $300 or $400 worth,” she said.
“He also told police he was still holding on to the drug for (that person).”
Police found a wooden box full of vials with different amounts of testosterone.
Ms Nitz said the phones revealed Attard had made two other illegal drug supplies – both being offers to supply – one of Trenbolone (another steroid) and the other was for 0.2g of methamphetamines.
She said Attard communicated a desire to supply the steroid “in case he gets raided”.
Defence barrister Scott Moon said his client had since spent time at the drug rehabilitation centre in north Rockhampton in the residential program Binbi Yadubay – Healthy Beginnings.
He said Attard was also diagnosed with schizophrenia with persecutory auditory hallucinations (hearing hostile, threatening voices).
Mr Moon said Attard was compliant with his medication and supported by his father who was in the back of the court.
He said Attard had since moved with his father to Russell Island where they are building a house.
The court heard Attard grew up in Agnes Waters and attended Toolooa State High School until midway through Year 11.
When he left school, he worked for his brother.
The court heard Attard started consuming marijuana at age 12, moved on to MDMA when he was 16 and started using meth shortly before the police raid.
Justice Paul Smith said the real reason Attard had the steroids was because he was going to the gym and desired to “improve his size and body image”.
Attard pleaded guilty to one count of possessing more than 50g of a dangerous drug, three counts of supplying drugs and one of possessing a thing used to supply drugs.
He was sentenced to 18 months prison with immediate parole release.
