The Clinton men have lifted the iconic Wesley Hall Cup for the fifth time in the club’s history.
They capped their unbeaten season with a 3-nil win over Nerimbera in the Football Queensland Central Coast Premier League grand final.
Victorious coach Michael Stephen said it was a great result for his team and the Gladstone-based club, which also won the women’s Premier League and the under-23 men’s titles.
It was third time lucky for the senior men, who also featured in the 2021 and 2022 deciders.
Stephen said it was a hard-fought final against Nerimbera and it was only when Scott Rouse buried the team’s third goal two minutes into injury time that he knew they had it won.
The 2023 title adds to Clinton’s previous successes in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2018.
Nerimbera has won the Cup 21 times since it was first presented in 1895.
Frenchville has been the most successful club, with that name etched on the trophy 28 times.
The ornate and highly valuable Wesley Hall Cup was made of pure Mount Morgan silver and gold.
One of the oldest perpetual trophies in Australian sport, it stands close to 1m tall and is valued - conservatively - at $120,000.
It was named after Wesley Hall, the first general manager of the Mt Morgan gold mine, who presented it to the Mt Morgan British Association Football Union in 1894.
The Cup was originally presented to the winning club which would hold it for 12 months but that is no longer the case.
It is now stored behind glass at the Frenchville Sports Club in Rockhampton. It is brought out on grand final day - under the watchful eye of security guards - for the presentations and photos before it is returned.
The winners now receive a perpetual shield that they keep for the year.
There are three Wesley Hall Cup trustees - Graeme Brady OAM, Peter Egan and Shaun Janes.
