An exclusion zone is in place and police are doorknocking homes after a gas line was hit by an excavator at Gladstone this morning.
Fire crews are working with the plumbing contractor to isolate the leak as residents are being warned to close their windows.
The incident occurred on Smith St in West Gladstone with one fire crew being called to the scene just before 9am Monday.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said the crew was responding to reports of a damaged gas line on Smith St, after it was hit by an excavator.
She said a gas examiner had been notified to assess the damage and the fire crew was working with a plumbing contractor.
The QFD spokeswoman said police were also on scene and had set up an exclusion zone around the leak area and were door knocking residents.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed officers closed a small section of Smith St while the gas leak was being repaired.
The contractors were able to identify the gas line and repair the leak, fire crews then performed atmospheric monitoring.
The scene was cleared just before 11am.
