Selectability to build new mental health support centre fronting Lakes Creek Road, Rockhampton

A non-for-profit organisation has lodged plans with council to build the facility. It comes as mental health was identified in the Census as Rockhampton’s highest health issue.

Plans to build a new mental health support centre in Rockhampton have been submitted to council.

Not-for-profit organisation Selectability received $3.1 million in Queensland Government funding at the end of last year to establish the Rockhampton Mental Wellbeing Safe Haven.

The facility will be built on vacant land next to the Victoria Tavern, fronting Lakes Creek Road, with access from Evans Street.

The 1700 sqm site was sold in August last year for $357,000.

The facility aims to provide a safe, shared space where the general public can gain support for mental health challenges.

It will deliver individual and group NDIS supports, a range of counselling and therapeutic services and mental wellbeing programs tailored to the needs of the community.

Selectability opened a mental health hub on Musgrave Street in early 2021 and provides a range of NDIS and government-funded services including individual support, support co-ordination, psychosocial recovery coaching and supported independent living.

Census data, which was released in July, showed mental health (such as anxiety and depression) was the top long-term health issue in the Rockhampton local government area.

Out of 81,968 people counted in the Rockhampton LGA, 9,039 people indicated mental health was one of their long-term health issues.

The data also showed the pay bracket with the highest number of mental health numbers in the Rockhampton LGA was people who earned between $300 and $649 a week, with 3,088 people falling into this category.

Rockhampton Regional Council planning officers will now assess the development application for approval.

Selectability expect the facility to be operational in October 2023.
