A new family owned and operated business offering high-quality and affordable housing solutions in the form of tiny homes and cabins is starting to ramp up on the Capricorn Coast.

Aussie Tiny Homes and Cabins started business in Yeppoon in January and has so far completed three homes, including two display homes.

The business is run by husband and wife duos Emma and Jeremy Power and Melanie and Brendan Vine, and specialises in building high-quality tiny homes and cabins to suit all budgets and styles.

Built to last, the tiny homes and cabins can be used as an affordable permanent residence, vacation home, rental property, or even an office space.

Jeremy Power, who is a boilermaker by trade, said the tiny homes were easily portable.

“There is such a crisis in the housing market at the moment, prices are so expensive,” he said.

“A lot of people are moving more towards the smaller houses, granny flats, cabins.

“This is what we build. A nice quality product that people can move around, put in their backyards and use as granny flats for kids, parents, grandparents, whatever suits.”

Emma Power, who is a co-owner with Melanie Vine and has a background in holiday parks, said the tiny homes were a great head start for people.

“They can get a cheap block of land, put one of these on it and when they can save up and afford to build an actual house and move into that they can rent the cabin,” she said.

Prices for an open plan tiny home or cabin start from $69,990 and take about four to six weeks to build.

“The minimal price at the moment to build a house you are looking at more than $400,000,” Mr Power said.

“It’s granted not as big as a full sized house, but depending on what they are needing, if it’s just a detached dwelling in the backyard, this would be plenty size for what people might be after.

“It definitely brings the price down.”

Brendan Vine, who is a builder, said they had brought a new industry to the region.

“There is nothing here what we do,” he said.

“We are trying to give something a bit fancy, something affordable and available for the community.

“We are giving affordable housing to people in need without having to ship it up from Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast or Brisbane.”

RENTAL PRICES LIKELY TO KEEP INCREASING

Rockhampton isn’t the only region feeling the cost-of-living hike, according to REIQ zone chairman for Rockhampton Noel Livingston, who said “inflation has bitten into all of us”.

“The rental prices have increased to a level where it is making people look at their discretionary spending at the very least,” Mr Livingston said.

“Demand is still very strong in the rental market. While the demand is the way it is, the rental prices will keep increasing.

“It’s really hard to get much under $400 a week now.”

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s next board meeting, where decisions regarding monetary policy are made, will be held on September 5.

Mr Livingston wished Aussie Tiny Homes and Cabins good luck, saying “there is a demand for affordable housing without a doubt”.

“I wish them all the best,” he said.
