The company developing a new $550 million solar power station near Rockhampton has proposed a construction start date in early January.
Government documents reveal Edify Energy’s estimated start date for the Smoky Creek Solar PV Power Station (Solar Farm) is January 3, 2022, and if work starts then the company expects construction to be completed in December next year.
However Edify this week reinforced that start date was an estimate.
“We are proceeding with preconstruction activities, although no accurate project start dates can be provided at this time,” an Edify Energy spokeswoman said.
The project is located in Central Queensland, 75km south of Rockhampton and 40km north of Biloela.
The new solar power station will stretch across about 1800 hectares of cleared land.
At peak construction, 350 people will be employed, predominantly local contractors.
Once complete, the new station could generate up to 1,194,000 MWh per annum of renewable energy - providing green, clean power to more than 206,000 homes.
Edify Energy says the project has complied fully with all applicable regulatory approvals and has the support of Banana Shire Council.
The company has also revealed the project, to be constructed and operated by Edify, will consist of eight main components: Solar photovoltaic panels; battery energy storage system; sub-station; new overhead powerline; transmission infrastructure; site buildings and storage areas; laydown and construction compound; and access tracks.
When approached this week about what had to happen between now and construction starting, a spokeswoman for Edify Energy said there were no updates on the project that the company could talk about at this stage.
