An old house has been removed from a North Rockhampton site to make way for a new $4.55 million neighbourhood centre.

The Queensland Government-funded facility on Musgrave St will be the first of its kind in the region.

The facility was announced by former Communities and Housing Minister Leanne Enoch in June last year.

It was originally projected to begin construction at the end of 2022 and be up and running in the second half of this year.

It is now expected to be completed in late 2024, subject to tender and contract negotiations.

Ms Enoch said the “construction of the new centre will improve access to community events, programs, information, and advice and referral services for the Rockhampton community, including for people experiencing domestic and family violence, social isolation and loneliness, homelessness and financial stress, people with disability and First Nations people”.

Rockhampton MP Barry O’Rourke added the COVID-19 pandemic and cost-of-living pressures has led to an increase in demand for social and community support services.

Mr O’Rourke said a project concept design was recently handed to the department for approval.

“It will serve as a place where people can come together, connect and share in activities and events and overcome feelings of social isolation and loneliness,” Keppel MP Brittany Lauga said.

The facility will be built at 48-54 Musgrave Street, behind the Zarraffa‘s coffee drive-thru and near the youth hostel/backpackers.

The construction will support 14 full-time equivalent jobs.
