Central Queensland has been hit with record breaking rain and the weather bureau predicted further falls for the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 115mm rain at Convicts Crossing, southwest of Mackay near Dysart, between Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology Harry Clark said the rain about Central Queensland was noteworthy for June, and in some locations even record breaking.

“Woodbine station, which is just near Hughenden, had 68 millimetres last night which is the highest June daily rainfall for that location and they’ve had data for over 118 years,” he said.

“But generally for most locations, through central in the northern interior Queensland it was the wettest June day since around 2016.”

Mr Clark said the peak of the rain had fallen overnight and on Thursday when Samuel Hill in the Capricornia region received 28.2mm between 9am and 12pm, and Yeppoon had received 14.4mm.

“There’s still possibly another 20 to 30 millimetres widespread across that region on Thursday and isolated, totals about 50 millimetres possible,” he said.

“As you go into Friday it’ll still remain very cloudy and a bit showery through the same areas about Mackay, Townsville, Rockhampton, inland as well, but not expecting the same magnitude of rainfall.

“The numbers are really dialled back from tomorrow. The rainfall won’t clear completely but really, we’re seeing the peak of the rainfall at the moment through those regions.”

Focusing on the South East Mr Clark said a possible shower could be expected near the coast in a south-easterly wind flow, with a little bit of cloud but no heavy totals expected.

“In Brisbane we’ve got partly cloudy in the forecast for Friday, the chance of rain increases slightly on Saturday to a shower or two and a 50% chance of rain,” he said.

“There may be a little bit of cloud around on the odd shower on the weekend but nothing too big in terms of heavy rain or anything like that.”

More importantly Mr Clark said a rain band would start to form through southwestern Queensland on Sunday.

“That will start moving into Southeast Queensland, sort of Monday or Tuesday next week with a chance for some higher rainfall totals,” he said.
