Heavy rain and thunderstorms made landfall in South East Queensland this afternoon, as a low pressure system moves across the state.

According to Energex’s lightning tracker, several lightning strikes had been recorded across the southeast corner of the state.

A slow-moving cloud band stretching from Central Queensland to the southeast is bringing steady rainfall to large parts of the state, with isolated thunderstorms bringing heavier falls.

The Bureau of Meteorology didn’t issued a severe weather warning for any thunderstorm activity.

It was the third unseasonable storm in the past week alone after two weather systems unleashed havoc on the southeast bringing traffic chaos and significant hail.

The monster low pressure system that stretches 3000km from north to south and covers almost a third of Australia is currently sweeping through western parts of Queensland.

The weather system has brought rainfall between 10 to 40mm across the southern interior as it moves across the state.

Charleville has recorded 24mm, 31mm fell at Wyandra, and 35mm near Blackall.

Earlier, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan How said the rainband was expected to push into South East Queensland this afternoon.

“We’ll see that rain band push across Brisbane, the Gold Coast later this afternoon and into the evening,” he said.

“Ahead of that, we will see cloud really building across the southeast of the state and then we’ll see showers tending to rain through the afternoon as that system pushes across, and we can expect to see the heaviest of the rain come through this evening.

“We are looking at between 10 to 20 millimetres across the southeast of the state, we may see some high, isolated falls.”

Mr How said there was also a risk of thunderstorms.

“We could see some thunderstorms rolling through as well, but we are not expecting to be issuing any severe weather warnings for that,” he said.

“We’re not expecting the rain until late this afternoon, and then it should clear off mid morning, so a sunny day to follow on Sunday.”
