Queensland’s road shame over Christmas has been revealed, though there are plans to stop the rot.

Qld drink driving numbers are up.

More than 1000 drug and drunk drivers have been charged as part of a holiday season road policing blitz, with Queensland Police warning there will be more cops on the ground for four more weeks.

Queensland Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Janelle Andrews confirmed 638 drunk drivers and 418 drug drivers have been charged since Operation Mistletoe began on December 13 – coming to an average of 75 inebriated motorists a day.

There has also been 6000 fines dished out to misbehaving drivers across the state’s roads and more than 80,000 random breath tests undertaken in just a fortnight.

“The silent heartache of road trauma is real, as you’ve heard today, tragically, Queensland is likely to exceed 300 lives lost on Queensland roads,” Ms Andrews said.

“We do not want another mother, father, son, daughter or child harmed on Queensland roads this year or ever.

“There have been more than 6000 people in addition to this, who have been seriously injured on our roads this year, many of whom will now face long term suffering and trauma. The ripple effect of lives lost on the road is felt by our community, families, but also emergency service workers.”

Queensland police will remain on high alert for drink drivers.

Ms Andrews called on motorists to drive to the conditions of the road and think about their behaviour and how they are feeling before they get behind the wheel.

“Use respect for themselves, but also for everybody else on the roads,” she said.

Operation Mistletoe will run until the end of January 2025.
