A Sunshine Beach born-again Christian has blamed his inability to pay the balance of his hotel accommodation on a missed “wealth transfer” from God.
Alan John Gow appeared in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to one count of fraud.
The court heard Gow had booked accommodation at Cayman Quays in Noosaville from February 18 to March 21, 2022.
Gow arrived via hospital transport and didn’t pay the balance on arrival like other guests are expected to.
Police prosecutor Alison Johnstone said the hotel owner was initially reluctant to have Gow stay due to the needs for his broken leg recovery and ended up assisting him with shopping, washing and groceries.
“There were constant requests during the stay for payment,” Sergeant Johnstone said.
“On March 11, 2022, the defendant told the informant he would pay in full on April 28 as God would bestow great wealth on him on that day and he needed to stay there to receive that wealth.”
When his stay had finished, Gow had $2326 left to pay out of $5626, which he failed to provide.
Gow told police in an interview he was supposed to receive a “wealth transfer” that did not eventuate.
Representing himself in court, Gow said he became a born-again Christian 21 years ago and explained his beliefs about the transfer from God.
“Well, God has let you down hasn’t he … he hasn't dropped it off yet,” Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said to Gow.
Gow told the court he believed the payment was now coming on May 19, by way of a lottery win.
“God is going to win Powerball for me of $80m,” Gow said.
“God promises things and he doesn’t lie.”
Magistrate Stjernqvist fined him $500 and did not record a conviction.
Gow was also ordered to pay $2326 in restitution.
