A man accused of bashing his pregnant partner has been found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.
Nilisi “Nick” Kaniki has also been found guilty of unlawful assault of a pregnant female destroying the life of a child before its birth.
Kaniki’s trial in Brisbane’s Supreme Court heard he repeatedly punched Selma Ibrahim at her Crestmead home about 7pm on the night of September 24, 2019, inflicting blunt force injuries.
He then sat “on the ground with his drugs” while Ms Ibrahim lay on the bed “unconscious, bleeding”, Crown prosecutor Nathan Crane told the jury who began their deliberations about 11.30am on Friday.
The following morning called triple-0 before sending a text, to the wrong person, that read “bro if anyone asks I was with you last night”.
Paramedics declared her dead at 7.06am.
Kaniki had proffered an alternate theory to police that Ms Ibrahim’s drug dealer was responsible for her injuries.
He told police Ms Ibrahim had already been assaulted by the time he claimed to have arrived at her home around 3pm on September 24.
He said he had spent some time with an injured Ms Ibrahim that night, before leaving her in “fine” condition around midnight to get more drugs.
He claimed when he returned the following morning he found Ms Ibrahim unconscious and commenced CPR.
The jury of five women and seven men returned their verdict just after 11am on Monday.
After hearing submissions on sentence from both sides Justice Sean Cooper reserved his decision.
