A Brisbane mum was left in disbelief after paying nearly $7.00 for a small bottle of water. Posting anonymously on a Facebook mums group, the bewildered mum described the price of water at the movies as unbelievable. “Omg I can’t deal with this economy,” she wrote.

“I just paid $6.70 for a small bottle of water at the movies. Shut the front door.”

“I’ve learnt my lesson. I haven’t been to the movies since pregnancy and back then which was only under 2 years ago they were still only around $3. Everything is insane out there.”

Savvy parents were quick to offer the mum suggestions to make the trip to the movies more affordable.

“Honestly I take the kids to Hungry Jack’s or McDonald’s beforehand and then just buy the family tickets because it’s just way cheaper,” Madison Bills replied.

“You can get water sippers from Woolies and Coles for $1.30 and they’re about one litre. Always get your snacks from the grocery store,” Elna Rice wrote.

Mum Mala Jay described the cost of snacks at the cinema as “daylight robbery”.

Another mum said she spent $7.90 for a bottle of water at the cinema earlier this year.

“Went home that night still thinking of the price of the water and not the movie I watched,” Glaiza N. Sagario wrote.

Jessikah Stewart encouraged parents to check apps before going to a store in person.

“Definitely grab items from Coles and Woolworths before you go in, even frozen drinks from Macca’s are better value. Fast food places often have deals on their apps vs. buying off the menu in person,” she wrote.

“Yes everything has gone up, but everything is also on ‘sale’ a lot more often so some simple googling when you need something like make up can save you heaps and buy the necessities when they are on sale such as toilet paper, nappies, washing detergent. You don’t always need to pay the inflated prices.”

It’s not just cinema snacks at a premium, with Amy May shocked the cost of food at McDonald’s.

“I brought three large meals at McDonald’s today and was $63. I couldn’t believe it,” she wrote.

While some moviegoers choose to bring their own snacks, it’s against the rules at many Australian cinema chains.

“As part of the terms of entry at our cinemas, external food is not permitted. Staff reserve the right to refuse entry if customers are non-compliant with the terms of entry,” Event Cinemas terms state.
