A PROPOSED 11-storey residential and parking tower in the Toowoomba CBD will help “revitalise” the city’s centre, according to the project’s developer.
Barry Bernoth has submitted his massive development next to the Easternwell building on Russell St to the Toowoomba Regional Council, following a year’s worth of preparation.
According to the report by JFP Urban Consultants, the tower would feature 307 car parks (two-thirds of which were for the public), 30 apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms as well as a shop and food outlet on the ground floor.
“The proposed development has been architecturally designed to reflect and enhance the central nature of the site and is intended for owner occupiers,” the report said.
“The proposed residential component promotes a subtropical lifestyle through large windows, subtropical landscaping and large outdoor living areas and balconies.”
Mr Bernoth said he wanted to see the CBD flourish, identifying a lack of inner-city living and parking as two roadblocks.
“We really believe in the CBD and we like to do our part to help revitalise it,” he said.
“This will attract workers in the CBD, because they know they’ll have a place to park their car.
“It will encourage other businesses into the CBD as well, because there is not an abundance of long-term car parks right now.”
Mr Bernoth said initial discussions with the council had been positive, and was hoping to see approval later this year.
He also said he planned to use as many local companies as possible during construction.
“These things you don’t put together in a week — this has been 12 months to progress,” Mr Bernoth said.
“The discussions we’ve had so far with council has been positive.
“We’ve had a good positive experience with the local builders we’ve used on (other projects), and we’ll be looking at local this time.”
The application to the council also included engineering and stormwater management reports.
