A major fire has cut off the primary access route to the Cairns International Airport, with police warning it will cause “traffic chaos”, as emergency crews battle to get the blaze under control.

A major fire closed the Bruce Highway access to Cairns International Airport, as crews battled to get the blaze under control.
The fire in a garage facility on Sheridan Street, close to the airport, was reported about 4.50am, with police closing the Bruce Highway turn-off as a result.
Police are now advising that both southbound lanes of Sheridan St are now open.
Northbound traffic on Sheridan Street remains reduced to one lane.Those wishing to get to the airport should use Lake Street to access Airport Ave, with police advising to in early to avoid traffic congestion.
