A Mackay born and raised dancer who worked his way to the Moulin Rouge in Paris has put together a performance with up-and-coming ballet artists from across the region.
Andergrove’s Zeak Tass, 28, hustled his way through Europe after getting a diploma from Newcastle’s National College of Dance, making the trip with nothing but a pool of savings and the determination to make his dream come true.
After six months of auditions and freelance work in the UK he landed a role at Disneyland in Paris, where he spent four years.
“It was intimidating,” Zeak said.
“I didn’t have much of a plan, just hope I would get a job.”
After his Disneyland success, he scored an audition with the Moulin Rouge and was hired on the spot.
“I was there from November 2022 ‘til May this year,” Zeak said.
“It was amazing.”
Zeak found his feet as a young man at the Leisa Payne School of Dance Mackay, and he’s now giving young dancers their own opportunity to shine.
His Contemporary Ballet Youth Company Z helps pre-professionals get their time in the spotlight, and the latest show, Unearthed, is being held in Ooralea on Saturday, September 7.
It’s drawn young people from across the region to him to train for the past seven weeks.
“I have 19 dancers in the cast, all local from Mackay and a few from Cannonvale, Bowen,” he said.
Unearthed tickets are $30 for adults, and $26 for children, with two shows — 3pm and 6pm — running for 45 minutes at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music Building, 21 University Drive, Ooralea.
