Will Cameron running 270km across Mackay for charities, wearing 10kg vest
A Qld running enthusiast is challenging himself to run an extraordinary distance to raise funds for charity this October, all while carrying extra weight.
After working a seven-day week out at Goonyella Riverside mine, you could forgive Will Cameron if he chose to rest on his week off at home.
But this 27-year-old electrician has a purpose.
Will has challenged himself to run 270km to raise funds for Top Blokes Foundation, Black Dog Institute, RUOK, and Royal Flying Doctor Services this October, while wearing a 10kg weighted vest.
For him, that extra weight represents the baggage that comes with mental and physical illnesses. It is a reminder of the weight he’s trying to take off other people’s shoulders.
Propelling him forward is the knowledge every extra step he takes will help others.
Raised in Walkerston, west of Mackay, Will began long distance running to improve his fitness levels to play soccer, but it was inspiration from a relative that made him run for a greater purpose.
“I had a distant family member that I met through my Aunty and Uncle that had multiple sclerosis,” Will said.
“So I began thinking about other people that can’t run, or don’t have the ability to run, instead of thinking about myself and I’d push for them.”
Will says he chose to raise money for these four specific charities due their strong ties with supporting men’s mental health and the rural community.
“When I first started running with the weight vest it became easier to carry the weight, like to help me train.
“But then I began carrying the weight in my mind of carrying the weight of others in terms of mental health and just doing that bit extra for them.
“It makes it easier and makes you feel good about yourself at the end of the day when you know you’re helping somebody else.
“They’re great charities across the board to push myself for and help out.
“Any money I can get donated to them would be good.”
