Teen apprentice faces life-changing injury after being found unconscious in wreck

An apprentice tradie was trapped unconscious after a sickening crash until his younger brother kicked out a window to get help. Now he’s in the fight of his young life.

Seriously injured Mackay teen Briden Bull hung upside down, unconscious in his wrecked vehicle as his younger brother desperately tried to kick out a glass window so he could run for help.

Now instead of celebrating completing the first year of his boilermaker apprenticeship, 18-year-old Briden is facing the greatest challenge of his young life: trying to walk again.

And despite a devastating diagnosis after suffering a terrible injury to his spinal cord, his aunt Natasha Biddle said her nephew was in good spirits about his future.

“He’s still very positive that he’s going to walk again,” Tash said.

Briden had been in the car with his 17-year-old brother Caden Bull – Briden was at the wheel – when the vehicle was involved in a rollover on Amamoor Creek Rd, in the Gympie region about 4pm on November 13.

The duo had been travelling behind another vehicle containing Briden’s older brother and sister, Riley and Tahnee, with the Mackay-based siblings all heading on the same road to their father’s house to celebrate his 50th’s birthday.

The convoy had nearly arrived at the property with the first car a little ahead – so they waited for Briden to catch up, but he never arrived.

“By the time they turned around and went back, the ambulance was there,” Tash said.

“His little brother had managed to kick the window out and climb out of the car and ring triple-0 to get help.

“He thought Briden was dead.

“He was stuck upside down unconscious in the car for quite a while … it would have been horrible.”

Emergency crews including the critical care LifeFlight medical crew, Queensland Ambulance Service flight paramedics, local paramedics and fire crews worked to remove the unconscious teen from his vehicle.

He was flown straight to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he underwent spinal surgery and remains in a serious condition in intensive care.

His mum Teresa Ross and siblings have been at his side, as have his father Nathaniel and partner Les-leigh.

Tash said Briden was able to move his arms, but had no feeling from his hip down in both legs.

“The neurosurgeons did say that the damage was done. They did surgery and put pins in, but they’ve told him that there is very minimal chance of him regaining any feeling. The damage was done as soon as it happened,” she said.

“He’s in quite a good mindframe … he’s very optimistic about recovery and still a light hearted boy.”

At the time he had been close to finishing his first year of a boilermaking apprenticeship with Independent Mining Services.

“It makes you realise how quickly life can change,” Tash said.

Tash has started a GoFundMe to help Briden and Teresa as it was unknown how long he would have to stay in Brisbane or what type of help he might need in the future.

The campaign has already raised more than $5000 in the past day and Tash said her sister had been overwhelmed by the support and love shown to her family.

“She’s just crying because she’s so surprised that people care and they want to help out, so I think it’s given her a little bit of positivity at such a hard time,” Tash said.
