TWO Sarina lady bowlers have won an annual pairs shield which has links going back to the
start of bowls in the township about 78 years ago.
Chris Smith and Kathy Mathews won the fourth annual Graham Shield, from runners-up
Robyn Large and Carmel Jenkins.
Alison Graham, whose family has links to the original founders of the club, presented the
shield.
The event is a descendant of the Johnston Shield which was started by Alec and Margaret
Johnston, who helped found the original Sarina Bowls Club about 78 years ago, on the site of
what is now the Sarina Leagues Club.
Alec and Margaret’s daughter Naomi married Tom Graham and continued attending and
presenting the Johnston Shield.
Naomi has passed away and her two daughters, Alison and Margaret Graham, have
continued with the Johnston Shield.
In honour of their parents they started the Graham Shield which is only open to Sarina lady
bowlers and is club-selected pairs, played annually.
