The club made an application to buy an area of the reserve where it now holds a lease until 2028.

Council documents state the lease was granted for a commercial/business purpose and the land was to be used for car park spaces only.

The area sought to be purchased is the 1246sq m of land positioned to the south of the existing clubhouse.

Magpies Sporting Club will use the land for an extension of the clubhouse.

An extension of the existing clubhouse could include more indoor and outdoor seating for patrons.

The club will also buy 232 square metres of the carpark that is positioned off Glenella Road.

The Magpies proposed to amalgamate the land into their adjoining freehold parcel.

The council’s Land & Road Use Committee had no objections to the application and received only three responses during the community consultation process

One was an objection to the sale of the land and the two other responses objected to the entire reserve being sold which is not proposed.

The Department of Resources currently owns the land, with the club holding a 30-year lease from 2007.

“This decision represents a really good outcome for our local community,” Councillor Michelle Green said.

“It continues to enhance Mackay’s reputation for providing stellar sporting and recreation facilities.”

The motion was approved with no objections at council.
