Despite a strong win for St Patrick’s College, the side fell short of its ultimate goal of qualifying for the Aaron Payne Cup semi finals.
The Mackay team played Rockhampton Grammar, with the side needing to defeat the travelling opposition by 40 points or more to move on.
St Pat’s won 28-12, which means its season is now over.
Michael Comerford said the ending of schoolboys careers was devastating for the players.
“It’s a tricky one, we’ve had a convincing win but not by the margin we needed,” he said.
“The realisation that their schoolboys careers are done and this was a bit of a missed opportunity, that’s what you’re seeing in their faces.”
Mercy College defeated Rockhampton Grammar to progress to the Cowboys Challenge semi finals.
Its win also knocked out Mackay State High School, with the school hanging onto fourth after Emmaus College defeated Shalom on Tuesday.

Mercy College will also play Rockhampton before a potential Cowboys Challenge finals campaign.
It will need to win its match against Rockhampton in order to progress to the semi finals.
If Mercy College wins its game, Mackay High will drop out of the finals after Emmaus College shocked Shalom on Tuesday.
