Mackay’s next crop of women’s coaches have the chance to learn in elite sporting pathways after the Gold Coast Suns announced a new initiative.

The club is offering two scholarships to female coaches across Gold Coast’s talent regions, which includes Mackay as a part of its academy program.

The Suns head of football Fiona Sessarago said the scholarship would provide fantastic opportunities for women in the sporting industry.

“We’re really proud as a club to be able to offer a scholarship like this, to be able to support the progression of female coaches,” she said.

“We think it’s extremely important to increase the number of females coaching elite sport and see this as a great way to give exposure to elite-level programs.”

The scholarship is not exclusive to AFL coaches, with applicants accepted from all sporting backgrounds.

The scholarship winners would work inside the Suns AFLW program as a development coach for the equivalent of one training session a week.

The coaches could choose an intensive period of coaching or to spread the sessions across the entire NAB AFLW season.

Each coach would receive the AFL level two coaching course as a result of the scholarship, and applications are open until October 8.
