Youngster Karmichael Dee boasts the best individual bowling figures of anyone in Mackay’s 3rd Grade, after his 5/6 against Brothers White in round one.

MACKAY Cricket’s senior one-day competitions have entered the Christmas bye period, presenting a perfect opportunity to check in on each grade’s statistical outliers.

The Daily Mercury has combed through the scorecards to find the top 10 runscorers, batting averages and total wicket-takers through six rounds of the one-day format.

Before we deep dive into the numbers, here are some of the individual highlights from the season so far:

Best batting innings: 158 - Jason Butterworth (Norths v Pioneer Valley, 1st Grade Round 1)

Best bowling innings: 7/17 - Matthew Wicks (Brothers v Souths, 1st Grade Round 6)

DBCT POOLE CUP 1ST GRADE – TOTAL RUNS (HIGHEST SCORE)

1 McBride, Rhys M (Magpies) – 329 (101*)

2 Shepherd, Peter (Norths) – 264 (120)

3 Butterworth, Jason J (Norths) – 248 (158)

4 Blaik, Peter (Walkerston) – 235 (88)

5 Austin, Shaun (Souths) – 210 (94)

6 Comerford, Michael (Brothers) – 193 (65)

7 Dyer, Darryn L (Norths) – 176 (62)

8 Vassallo, Sam (Walkerston) – 165 (56)

9 Frerichs, Jakob (Walkerston) – 156 (43)

10 Dunn, Michael (Brothers) – 153 (63*)

Notes: Magpies skipper Rhys McBride leads Norths openers Peter Shepherd and Jason Butterworth in the 1st Grade runscoring tally through six rounds. McBride has played in every possible innings so far this season – one more than Shepherd and two more than Butterworth.

Butterworth’s 158 against Pioneer Valley in the opening round remains the highest individual score of any batsmen in Mackay’s top three grades.

DBCT POOLE CUP 1ST GRADE – BATTING AVERAGE (min 3 innings)

1 Bock, Joel (Walkerston) – 131

2 Shepherd, Peter (Norths) – 88

3 McBride, Rhys M (Magpies) – 65.8

4 Comerford, Michael (Brothers) 64.33

5 Butterworth, Jason J (Norths) – 62

6 Austin, Shaun (Souths) – 52.5

T7 Blaik, Peter (Walkerston) – 47

T7 McEldowney, Chris (Walkerston) – 47

9 Dunn, Michael (Brothers) – 38.25

10 Dunn, Christopher (Brothers) – 33.5

Notes: Joel Bock remains the hardest man in Mackay to get out – once again topping the batting average charts at the midpoint of the season. The Walkerston all-rounder had an incredible run of not-out innings last season and has continued that form in 2020, finishing not-out in four of his five innings for an average of 131. Only teammate Chris McEldowney (47) has as many not-outs this season, though he has played one more innings than Bock.

DBCT POOLE CUP 1ST GRADE – TOTAL WICKETS (BEST FIGURES)

1 Bock, Joel (Walkerston) – 17 (5/21)

2 Wicks, Matthew (Brothers) – 14 (7/17)

3 Dwyer, Jack (Brothers) – 12 (5/31)

T4 Kohler, Mason W (Norths) – 11 (3/26)

T7 Frerichs, Jakob (Walkerston) – 9 (5/27)

T7 Wadsworth, Mitchell (Brothers) – 9 (4/15)

10 Holmes, Harrison (Souths) – 8 (2/17)

Notes: Bock rules the roost among the bowlers as well, with his dual five-fa hauls helping lift the Walkerston spinner to the top of the 1st Grade bowling charts. Brothers skipper Matthew Wicks’ incredible 7/17 against Souths at the weekend vaulted him into second place on the table. Wicks’ seven-wicket haul is the best individual figures of any bowler in Mackay’s top three competitions so far this season.

DBCT CUP 2ND GRADE – TOTAL RUNS (HIGHEST SCORE)

1 Day, Chris J (Norths) – 307 (123)

2 Smith, Darren J (Magpies) – 273 (103*)

3 Tatow, Daniel (Norths) – 241 (92)

4 Hunt, Ron (Sarina) – 201 (69)

8 Seaniger, Patrick (Brothers) – 132 (57)

9 Thwaite, Craig (Magpies) – 130 (46)

10 Edge, Darren (Walkerston) – 126 (69)

Notes: Chris Day boasts both the highest aggregate and single-innings tally in 2nd Grade so far this season. Norths’ big-hitting batsman has failed to eclipse 30 runs just once this season, when he was caught on 16 against Magpies in round four. Walkerston’s Thomas Vandenberg shot up the rankings thanks to his unbeaten 101 against Sarina in round five. Thank single innings accounts for 59.4 per cent of Vandenberg’s season total.

DBCT CUP 2ND GRADE – BATTING AVERAGE (min 3 innings)

1 Smith, Darren J (Magpies) – 91

2 Day, Chris J (Norths) – 61.4

3 Tatow, Daniel (Norths) – 60.25

4 Seaniger, Patrick (Brothers) – 44

5 Evans, Grant (Sarina) – 43.5

6 Vandenberg, Thomas (Walkerston) – 42.5

7 Newton, Troy (Norths) – 42

8 Brooks, Jarrod (Norths) – 38.5

9 Nosworthy, Trevor (Pioneer Valley) – 36.5

10 Woods, Michael (Pioneer Valley) – 35.33

Notes: An unbeaten 103 against Souths in round five helped lift Magpies’ Darren Smith into top spot on the batting average charts. Norths’ Duncan Sperling technically holds top spot with an average of 113, however has only played two innings and thus does not qualify for this list. The top three of Smith, Chris Day and Daniel Tatow have all finished five innings this season.

Notes: Craig Thwaite narrowly leads Ranju Somanathan and Aaron Durelli in the race for 2nd Grade’s top wicket-taker. Thwaite’s 5/17 against Brothers in round three is one of only two five-wicket hauls in 2nd Grade so far this season. Norths’ Jordon Baker boasts the other five-fa.

1 Ryan, Lance L (Walkerston) – 351 (85)

6 McKenzie, Chris (Pioneer Valley) – 206 (82)

7 Miles, Shane (Brothers) – 170 (64*)

8 Gauci, John J (Pinnacle) – 167 (75)

9 Zeller, Dean (Pioneer Valley) – 164 (84*)

10 Boyd, Matthew (Magpies) – 145 (49)

Notes: Lance Ryan take a bow – you are Mackay’s leading runscorer in the top three grades through six rounds of one-day action, just. Only four runs separate Walkerston’s Ryan and second-ranked Robert Brett of Norths for the top spot – the latter having played one less innings. In the span of two rounds, Brett posted totals of 135 (v Pioneer Valley Green) and 124 not-out (v Pinnacle) to storm to the top of the charts.

ONE DAY SHIELD THIRD GRADE – BATTING AVERAGE (min 3 innings)

1 StClair, Mick (Walkerston) – 129

2 Brett, Robert (Norths) – 115.67

3 Zillfleisch, David (Pioneer Valley) – 77

4 McKenzie, Chris (Pioneer Valley) – 68.67

5 Goliath, Deaune (Souths) – 65.5

6 Armstrong, Luke (Brothers) – 59

7 McPherson, Scott (Walkerston) – 58

8 Miles, Shane (Brothers) – 56.67

9 Zeller, Dean (Pioneer Valley) – 54.67

10 Bell, Danyon (Souths) – 54.5

Notes: Walkerston’s Mick StClair narrowly met the three-innings hurdle required to feature in the batting average charts. Twice unbeaten, including a stellar 104 not-out against Pioneer Valley Gold on November 1, StClair pips runs leader Robert Brett on this leaderboard. Brett was bowled lbw for just 6 against Brothers Blue at the weekend, dropping his average from 170.5 to 115.67.

ONE DAY SHIELD THIRD GRADE – TOTAL WICKETS (BEST FIGURES)

1 Newbery, Liam (Walkerston) – 17 (5/20)

2 Zillfleisch, David (Pioneer Valley) – 13 (5/12)

T3 Zeller, Dean (Pioneer Valley) – 12 (4/32)

T3 Zurvas, Liam R (Magpies) – 12 (4/25)

T5 Beardmore, Nicholas R (Brothers) – 11 (3/47)

T5 Teys, Justin (Pinnacle) – 11 (3/10)

T9 Smith, Kayne T (Brothers) – 10 (5/21)

T9 Van Der Linden, Scott (Pinnacle) – 10 (4/15)

T9 Brett, Lachlan (Norths) – 10 (3/26)

Notes: Walkerston’s Liam Newbery has separated himself from a stacked top order of bowlers in Mackay’s 3rd Grade. Newbery’s four-wicket lead over second-placed David Zillfleisch is the same gap as second to 14th on the wicket-takers’ leaderboard.

A special mention needs to go to Karmichael Dee of Pioneer Valley, whose only bowling stint of the season so far came in round one, when he bagged five wickets for just six runs against Brothers White. Dee’s 5/6 remains the best single-innings bowling performance of the 3rd Grade one-day season. The teenager’s five-fa is one of just five such hauls in the grade so far.
