Aaron Payne Cup games cancelled for Mackay High, St Patrick’s College

Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge clashes have been cancelled for Mackay teams, but replacement games have been scheduled in the coming weeks.

Schoolboy football has been thrown into turmoil as the South-East Queensland Covid-19 cluster spreads north.

St Patrick’s College was set to host Rockhampton Grammar School on Wednesday, while Mackay State High School was scheduled to travel to Rockhampton to play Shalom.

Both matches were postponed with growing concerns of the spread in Rockhampton.

Ignatius Park played its game against St Brendan’s College in Mackay, despite other Aaron Payne Cup matches being postponed.

Mackay High will play a replacement game against Shalom on Wednesday, August 11, with the game still set to be played in Rockhampton.

St Patrick’s College’s clash with Rockhampton Grammar does not have a confirmed rescheduled time at this stage.

With a week off between round eight of the Aaron Payne Cup and the semi finals, the replacement game will be played if the result directly affects the positioning on the ladder.

If the result would have no bearing on the finalists, the game is not expected to be played.

St Patrick’s coach Michael Comerford said the squad was disappointed the game did not go ahead.

“We’ve been a bit rough in the last two weeks and there’s a lot of improvement left, everyone was really keen to turn around our form,” he said.

“The teams we’ve played in Iggy Park and TCC have been much better on the day, but we’re confident we can fix what’s not going to plan.

“If we get the opportunity to progress through to the semi finals, we’ll be really motivated to play them again and make up for those lost results.”
