$16,000 in prizes: Why the Mackay Triathlon Festival is poised for another strong turnout in 2024
There’s 16,000 reasons why organisers at the Mackay Triathlon Festival a confident they’ll get another strong turnout for this year’s competition.

The Mackay Triathlon Festival is set to be back and better than ever in 2024, with more than $16,000 in total prizes up for grabs in what organisers are hoping will be their biggest and best event yet.
With more than $11,000 in cash prizes up for grabs, plus an additional $5000 in prizes donated by local businesses, event organisers are hoping to see upwards of 200 people participate in one of the 16 events on offer on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22.
“There’s prize money available for the podium finishers overall but also for people across each age group. You don’t have to be the fastest going around to win a bit of cash,” Mackay Triathlon Club treasurer Stephanie Allen said.
“It’s not a heap of money per winner but hopefully enough to act as a bit of an extra incentive.”
But it’s not just cash that’s on offer to build up the entrants list, with Allen saying the club has introduced plenty of shorter distance and alternate events to entice people of a wide range of abilities.
“We have the Olympic distance (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) but we also have the sprint and enticer distances which are shorter to encourage more participants,” Allen said
“We also have a variety of different events including the ocean swim, duathlon, aquabike and aquathlon which allow people to compete in only one or two of the three possible events.
“So if you’re not a confident bike rider or swimmer you can still participate in the other two sections.”
