ASIC weighs up cryptocurrency regulation

Cryptocurrency has made its way into the Mackay real estate market with a beachfront property on sale for 30 Bitcoin.

Nutrien Harcourts Mackay real estate agent Gary Johns said the Carmila property Aquila Cove was a unique sale in need of a “unique buyer”.

“The owners will be accepting Bitcoin. You don’t run into that often,” Mr Johns said.

“I do know of a property that has been through a successful settlement through Bitcoin in Queensland but this is the first in Mackay.”

For buyers without Bitcoin, Aquila Cove is also available for 440 Ethereum, another form of cryptocurrency, or $2,105,713.21.

Aquila Cove, located an hour south of Mackay, first went on the market in 2017 after the current owners decided to retire.

The 28.4 hectare (70.18 acre) property had been in the same family for three generations.

“(A buyer) must have Bitcoin in their portfolio,” Mr Johns said.

“I don’t know how many lawyers in Queensland are knowledgeable (in Bitcoin sales) … but I’m certain (there will be more like this in the future).”

The property sale will include equipment such as a four-in-one front end loader tractor, a Polaris trail mower, a cement mixer, a three-point linkage grader blade/ripper, a three-point linkage carry all, and a 200L spray unit.

There is a recently renovated ‘Studio’ at the western end of Aquila Cove, with main electricity, hot and cold running water, airconditioning, a bedroom, a kitchen, bathroom and laundry, and fast internet.

The ‘Beach House’ has also been recently renovated, and is located on the bank of the tidal estuary.

The Beach House has a bedroom, a rainwater tank, kitchen, separate ensuite, lights, hot and cold running water, and internet connection – all powered by solar.

Two sheds, a large open shed with electricity and a machinery shed, are on the property, as well as a shipping container for storage.

For those wishing to enjoy homegrown produce, Aquila Cove also boasts 26 kinds of fruit trees including mango, avocado, lychee, mulberry, orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit, banana, olives, grapes, pawpaw, custard apple, fig, pomegranate, peach, passionfruit, jackfruit, guava, as well as coffee, macadamia and pecan trees.

Most vegetables, from asparagus to zucchini, are also grown in the extensive vegetable garden.

Aquila Cove provides a “totally self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle”.

The property could be used for residential living, an eco-tourism resort, caravan or camping park, aquaculture, intensive horticulture, free range chicken, egg or pork production, or farm forestry.

A third of Aquila Cove is situated on the mainland, with the other two thirds a tidal island of pristine forest, with hundreds of metres of beach front.

The island is separated from the mainland by a tidal zone, and the northern and southern boundaries of the island are tidal creeks.

The Pacific Ocean forms the eastern boundary of the property.
