A man has been charged after police car was rammed resulting in officers arresting a Central Queensland man in dramatic scenes on the Mackay CBD fringe.

Officers swarmed Milton St about 1.15pm when earlier efforts to intercept a black Holden Commodore were unsuccessful.

It is understood the black Commodore reversed into a stationary police vehicle several times near the Gordon and Milton streets intersection.

A 23-year-old Moranbah man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Paul O’Gorman works at the TGM 4X4 Megastore and he went out into the street after he heard a crash.

“That’s when we came out and had a look,” he said.

“The police car was still pretty much on the back of that commodore but then he (the driver of the commodore) started driving off.

“The police officer has then smashed the window trying to get in.

“I think he was trying to turn the key off or disable the vehicle.”

Mr O’Gorman said the officer pulled the man onto the ground.

“That’s when they arrested him here on the ground.”

He added the officer was on his own at the beginning of the incident.

“It was just old mate on his own to start with,” he said.

“One police car, one police inside.”

Mr O’Gorman said the driver of the commodore acted in a compliant manner once he had been pulled onto the ground and arrested.

“Once they got him out of the car, he seemed pretty compliant,” he said.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics were called to the incident and took the man to Mackay Base Hospital.

He was seen fitted with handcuffs being loaded into the ambulance.

The damaged Commodore was towed from the scene.

Police investigations remain ongoing. The man will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court at a later date.

In an unrelated incident earlier today, paramedics transported four people to Mackay Base Hospital in stable conditions after a two-vehicle crash at Marian.

The incident occurred shortly before 12.15pm at the corner of Daly St and Anzac Ave.

In Bowen, five people were taken to hospital after a two-vehicle crash at the corner of Gordon and Leichhardt streets about 1.10pm.
