A young Mackay tradie has been chastised for violently lashing out against security and police after he was refused entry during a big night on the Whitsundays nightclub strip.

The 21 year old’s “appalling” conduct began against Mama Africa security when they would not let him in the club on October 8, 2023.

Harrison Neale Bryan was yelling at the guard, calling him a “f–king grub” and asking “where’s my f–king hat”.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard as a result police were called and Bryan was placed under arrest, but he also fought back against police as they were attempting to place him in handcuffs.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Emma Myors said Bryan tried to bite police and also swung around the handcuffs after officers were unable to keep hold of them.

The court heard he yelled “put my hat on and I’ll leave it c–t”.

Sergeant Myors said this was a “violent case of fighting against security guards and fighting against police”, arguing he deserved the mandatory unpaid community service as well and a large fine.

Bryan pleaded guilty to charges of commit public nuisance in the vicinity of licensed premises, failing to leave licensed premise and obstructing police.

Solicitor Lynda Hughes, of Macrossan and Amiet, said her client was “extremely embarrassed at how he’d behaved on the night”.

“He’d been drinking heavily,” Ms Hughes said.

The court heard Bryan was born in Moranbah and lived with his parents in Mackay where he graduated from Holy Spirit College.

Ms Hughes said he was a qualified electrician, employed full time and worked at a mine.

Ms Hughes argued the offending, which occurred while he was in Airlie celebrating a mate’s 30th, was an “aberration of his character” as he had no entries on his history and pushed for no conviction to be recorded as he would have to inform his employer.

Magistrate Michelle Howard told Bryan “your behaviour … was appalling”.

“There’s no other word for it.”

She took into account his young age and the three character references indicating his behaviour was out of character.

Bryan was fined $1200 and ordered to complete 40 hours unpaid community service within the next 12 months.

Convictions were not recorded.
