Young man killed in single vehicle car crash, Nebo, west of Mackay

A young man has died in a horrific crash outside a regional Qld city after his ute veered off the road and struck a tree, trapping him inside. LATEST.

A 21-year-old Queensland man has died after his ute plunged into a gully on Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene along Oxford Downs Sarina Rd at Nebo southwest of Mackay, about 2km from the Marlborough Sarina Rd intersection, at 11.15am.

A QPS spokeswoman said upon arrival officers found a male driver with “life-threatening injuries”, with firefighters, paramedics and SES members also attending the crash.

Mackay Forensic Crash Unit Senior Constable Michael Parker said the man from Rockyview in the Rockhampton region appeared to have been travelling to Sarina when for “reasons currently unknown,” his vehicle crossed to the opposite side of the road and then veered off gradually for about 70m before “striking” a tree.

“We are trying to determine if he was on his way to or from work because that will inform our lines of inquiries,” Constable Parker said.

He said emergency crews applied CPR and first aid “for an extended period of time” but could not save the young man.

The ute came to rest in a gully and it is understood the driver was trapped inside before authorities arrived on scene.

The roof was completely destroyed on impact, the bonnet is crumpled, pieces of the windscreen are strewn all throughout the vehicle, and parts of the engine now litter the base of the gully.

There are also tyre tracks worn into the grass showing where the ute left the road and flattened a road picket.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and to expect significant delays as the SES directed traffic via the one open lane.
