Firefighters have set a 5km exclusion zone near Mackenzie River, south of Middlemount, after a truck crash sparked a spreading grass fire.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Grasstree Rd at 12.16pm after a fuel tanker rolled and set alight.

The fire has now spread to nearby grass, with five crews on scene working to contain it and stop the fire still burning on the truck.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said the fuel tanker had two trailers, which left a lot of fuel to burn.

It is understood one trailer has since had the fire extinguished.

A QAS spokesman said the male driver was assessed on scene but uninjured.

More to come.
